Charles practises in all areas of public and commercial law. He is particularly interested and experienced in administrative law, judicial review, employment law, industrial relations, and workers’ compensation. Charles also practises in criminal law and related matters.
Charles was called to the Bar in 2015. He has eight years’ experience in government legal roles, including three years in a State department’s legal and administrative law unit, and over two-and-a-half years with the Queensland Director of Public Prosecutions. He is an experienced advocate. While working as a barrister for the DPP, Charles appeared for the Crown in over 60 hearings before the Supreme and District Courts, and advised on over 150 cases.
Before his call to the Bar, Charles served as associate to Deputy President O’Connor of the Industrial Court of Queensland and Queensland Industrial Relations Commission. Charles is the author of several articles in peer-reviewed law journals. He has also reported on cases for the Federal Court Reports and Federal Law Reports.
Charles holds a Bachelor of Laws (with Honours) and a Bachelor of Arts (History) from the University of Queensland.
Charles’ advocacy experience includes:
- Appearing in over 10 hearings before the Supreme Court of Queensland;
- Appearing in over 50 hearings before the District Court of Queensland;
- Appearing for the Commissioner of Police in several appeals;
- Successfully opposing several Supreme and District Court bail applications; and
- Successfully defending an appeal to the District Court concerning the proper construction of the term “period of imprisonment” in s 160B of the Penalties and Sentences Act 1992 (Qld).
In addition, Charles has advised on over 150 cases.
